Every term you will ever encounter in the study of bees, beekeeping, honey production, and bee biology. Defined plainly. Organized alphabetically. Comprehensive to a degree that suggests the author lost track of time.

A
Abdomen
Anatomy
The posterior section of a bee's body, containing the digestive system, reproductive organs, and, in worker bees, the stinger and venom gland. The abdomen's distinctive banding pattern provides camouflage and species identification.
Africanized Bee
Species
A hybrid between the African honeybee (Apis mellifera scutellata) and various European subspecies, created accidentally in Brazil in 1957 when 26 swarms escaped from an experimental program. Known for aggressive colony defense — responding to perceived threats in far greater numbers than European honeybees. Now established across South America, Central America, and parts of the US Southwest.
Apiary
Beekeeping
A location where bee colonies are kept. From the Latin "apis" (bee). Can range from a single backyard hive to commercial operations containing thousands of colonies. The person managing an apiary is an apiarist, though beekeeper is the more commonly used term.
Apis
Taxonomy
The genus containing all true honeybees. Seven to eleven species are recognized depending on taxonomic authority, of which Apis mellifera (the Western honeybee) is by far the most commercially significant. Other species include Apis cerana (Eastern honeybee), Apis dorsata (giant honeybee), and Apis florea (dwarf honeybee).

Colony Behavior
Worker bees that surround and tend to the queen, grooming her, feeding her royal jelly, and carrying away her waste. The queen is rarely without a retinue of 8–12 attendant bees at any time.

Beeswax
Production
A natural wax produced by worker honeybees from glands on their abdominal segments. Used to construct honeycomb. Worker bees consume approximately 6–8 pounds of honey to produce 1 pound of beeswax. Used commercially in cosmetics, candles, wood polish, pharmaceuticals, and food coating.
Bottom Board
Equipment
The floor of a beehive, on which the lower hive body rests. Screened bottom boards allow mite debris to fall through for monitoring, while solid bottom boards provide more weather protection. The choice between them is a matter of some debate among beekeepers.
Brood
Biology
The collective term for bee eggs, larvae, and pupae. "Open brood" refers to eggs and larvae visible in unsealed cells; "capped brood" refers to pupae sealed under wax caps. The brood nest is the area of the hive where brood is raised, typically in the lower boxes of a managed hive.
Beekeeper
General
A person who maintains bee colonies. Also called an apiarist. In the United States, there are approximately 125,000 hobbyist beekeepers and roughly 2,000 commercial operations. The distinction matters: a hobbyist maintains a few hives for personal use; a commercial beekeeper manages hundreds or thousands of colonies for pollination services and honey production.

Pollination
Also called sonication. A technique used by bumblebees and some other bees (but not honeybees) in which the bee vibrates its thoracic flight muscles at approximately 400Hz, causing anthers to release pollen in a sudden burst. Critical for crops including tomatoes, peppers, blueberries, and cranberries, which evolved to release pollen only under this stimulus.

Caste
Colony Structure
A distinct category of bee within a colony, differentiated by morphology and role. Honeybee colonies have three castes: the queen (one, fertile female), workers (thousands, sterile females), and drones (hundreds, males). Caste is determined by larval nutrition in queens and workers; drones develop from unfertilized eggs.
Colony Collapse Disorder
Disease
A phenomenon first widely reported in 2006 in which worker bees abruptly disappear from a hive, leaving behind the queen, brood, and food stores. The precise cause remains debated, with evidence pointing to a combination of pesticides (particularly neonicotinoids), Varroa mites, pathogens, and poor nutrition. CCD events have declined since 2010, though overall colony losses remain high.
Comb Honey
Honey
Honey sold still contained within the natural beeswax comb in which it was produced. Considered by many to be the purest form of honey, as it has undergone no extraction or processing. The wax is edible. More labor-intensive to produce than extracted honey.
Compound Eye
Anatomy
One of two large multifaceted eyes on either side of a bee's head, composed of thousands of individual lenses (ommatidia). Compound eyes excel at detecting motion and pattern but produce lower resolution than vertebrate eyes. Bees can see ultraviolet light, which is invisible to humans but visible in many flower patterns that guide bees to nectar.

Drone
Colony Structure
Male honeybee. Drones develop from unfertilized eggs through a process called parthenogenesis. They have no stinger, perform no foraging or hive maintenance, and exist solely to mate with virgin queens. After mating (which is fatal), or as winter approaches, workers expel surviving drones from the hive. A colony may contain 200–1,500 drones during peak season.
Dance Language
Communication
The system by which forager bees communicate the location of food sources to hive mates through movement. The round dance indicates nearby sources (within 50 meters); the waggle dance communicates direction and distance of more distant sources. The waggle dance's angle relative to vertical corresponds to the angle of the food source relative to the sun, and its duration indicates distance. Discovered by Karl von Frisch, who received the Nobel Prize for its description in 1973.

Extractor
Equipment
A centrifugal device used to remove honey from comb without destroying it. Frames of uncapped comb are placed in the extractor and spun; centrifugal force throws honey from the cells while leaving the wax comb intact for reuse. Extractors range from small hand-cranked two-frame models to large commercial radial extractors holding dozens of frames.
Eusocial
Biology
The highest level of social organization in animals, characterized by cooperative care of young, overlapping generations in a colony, and reproductive division of labor. Honeybees, bumblebees, and stingless bees are eusocial. Most bee species (approximately 75%) are actually solitary.

Forager
Colony Behavior
A worker bee engaged in collecting nectar, pollen, water, or propolis from outside the hive. Foraging typically begins when a worker is 2–3 weeks old. A forager may visit 50–100 flowers per trip and make 10 or more trips per day. Foragers constitute roughly 25–35% of a colony's worker population.
Frame
Equipment
A rectangular wooden or plastic structure that holds honeycomb inside the hive body. Frames allow beekeepers to inspect, move, and manipulate comb without damaging it. The modern removable frame, developed in 1851 by Lorenzo Langstroth, is the foundation of modern beekeeping — before its invention, harvesting honey required destroying the entire hive.

Guard Bee
Colony Behavior
Worker bees positioned at the hive entrance to inspect returning foragers and repel intruders. Guard bees identify hive members by scent (colony pheromone). They will sting perceived threats and release alarm pheromone — isoamyl acetate, which smells like bananas — to recruit additional defenders.

Honeycomb
Biology
The hexagonal wax structure built by honeybees to store honey, pollen, and brood. The hexagonal shape is mathematically optimal — it uses the minimum wax to create the maximum storage volume. Worker bees produce wax from abdominal glands, chew it to soften it, and construct cells with remarkable geometric precision without any measuring tools.
Hive Body
Equipment
The main box or boxes forming a managed beehive. In the Langstroth system, hive bodies are stackable wooden boxes holding 8 or 10 frames. The lower boxes (deeps) typically house brood; upper boxes (supers) are added for honey storage. Also called a "super," though this term more specifically refers to honey-storage boxes added above the brood area.
Hypopharyngeal Gland
Anatomy
Paired glands in the head of worker bees that produce royal jelly — the substance fed exclusively to queen larvae and to all larvae during their first days of life. These glands are highly developed in young nurse bees and atrophy as bees age into foraging roles.

Invertase
Biology
An enzyme produced in the hypopharyngeal glands of worker bees that breaks down sucrose into glucose and fructose during honey production. Nectar is approximately 80% water and 20% sucrose; finished honey is 17–20% water with sucrose converted to simpler sugars. Invertase is a primary agent of this conversion.

Langstroth Hive
Equipment
The most widely used beehive design in the world, invented by American clergyman Lorenzo Langstroth in 1851. Its key innovation was the "bee space" — a 3/8-inch gap maintained between all hive components, which bees leave clear rather than filling with propolis or wax. This allows frames to be removed without destroying comb. The Langstroth patent is considered the foundation of modern commercial beekeeping.
Larva
Biology
The legless, grub-like second stage of bee development, following the egg stage. Worker and drone larvae are fed a mixture of pollen and honey (bee bread) from day 4 onwards; queen larvae receive royal jelly exclusively throughout larval development. The larval stage lasts approximately 5–6 days before pupation.

Mead
Honey
An alcoholic beverage produced by fermenting honey with water, and often fruits, spices, or grain. Considered the world's oldest alcoholic drink, with evidence of production dating to at least 7000 BCE in China. Also called "honey wine." Experiences periodic revivals of popularity, most recently coinciding with craft beverage trends in the 2010s.

Science
The scientific study of bees. A branch of entomology. A person who studies bees is a melittologist. The word derives from the Greek "melissa" (bee). The related term "apiology" refers specifically to the study of honeybees of the genus Apis.

Nectar
Biology
A sugary liquid produced by flowering plants in structures called nectaries, typically located at the base of flowers. Nectar is the primary raw material for honey. Its composition varies by plant species, but typically consists of sucrose, glucose, fructose, water, and trace amino acids and minerals. Bees collect it using their proboscis and store it in a honey stomach (crop) separate from their digestive stomach.
Neonicotinoids
Pesticides
A class of systemic insecticides that are absorbed throughout a plant's tissues, including pollen and nectar, and thus reach bees during foraging. Associated with sub-lethal effects including impaired navigation, memory, and reproduction in bees. Banned for outdoor use in the European Union since 2018. One of several factors implicated in bee population decline. The debate over their precise contribution to colony losses is ongoing.

Pheromone
Communication
A chemical signal produced by bees to communicate with other colony members. Honeybee colonies produce over 30 identified pheromones governing behaviors including alarm (isoamyl acetate), swarming (Nasonov pheromone), queen recognition (queen mandibular pheromone), and brood care. Pheromone communication is the primary coordination mechanism in a colony of up to 80,000 individuals.
Propolis
Biology
A resinous mixture collected by bees from tree buds, sap flows, and other plant sources, combined with wax and salivary enzymes. Used to seal gaps in the hive, coat the interior surfaces (creating an antimicrobial lining), and sometimes mummify hive invaders too large to remove. Has demonstrated antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Used in traditional medicine and now marketed as a health supplement.

Queen
Colony Structure
The sole reproductive female in a honeybee colony. Physically distinguished from workers by her longer abdomen. Mates only during her first weeks of life, on multiple "mating flights" during which she may mate with 12–20 drones. Stores sperm in a specialized organ (spermatheca) and uses it to fertilize eggs for her entire 3–5 year lifespan. A failing or dead queen triggers emergency queen-rearing behavior in the colony.
Queen Cell
Biology
A specially constructed, peanut-shaped wax cell in which a queen bee develops. Significantly larger than worker or drone cells, oriented vertically. Emergency queen cells are built over existing worker cells when a queen is suddenly lost; swarm cells are built at the bottom of frames in anticipation of swarming. The presence of queen cells is a significant event requiring beekeeper attention.
R
Royal Jelly
Biology
A protein-rich secretion produced by the hypopharyngeal glands of worker bees, fed exclusively to queen larvae and to all larvae during their first three days. The exclusive feeding of royal jelly to a larva destined to be a queen (rather than switching it to pollen and honey) triggers the developmental pathway that produces a queen. Marketed as a health supplement in various forms, with limited evidence supporting claimed benefits.

Smoker
Equipment
A device used by beekeepers to calm bees during hive inspections. Cool smoke puffed into the hive entrance and over the top bars triggers a feeding response in bees (they instinctively prepare to evacuate in case of fire), making them less likely to sting. Also masks alarm pheromones. Various fuels are used: burlap, pine needles, dried citrus peel, commercial pellets. The basic design has changed little since the 1870s.
Swarm
Colony Behavior
The process by which a honeybee colony reproduces at the colony level. When a colony becomes crowded, the old queen and approximately half the workers leave together to find a new home, temporarily clustering on a surface (tree branch, fence post) while scouts search for suitable cavities. Swarms are generally non-aggressive; bees have no home to defend and have gorged on honey before departing. The original hive retains brood, food, and will raise a new queen.

Varroa Destructor
Parasites
A parasitic mite that feeds on the fat bodies of developing and adult honeybees, and transmits multiple viral diseases. Originally a parasite of the Asian honeybee (Apis cerana), which evolved behavioral resistance. Transferred to Western honeybees (Apis mellifera) in the 20th century, for which it is devastating. Now present on every continent except Australia. Widely considered the single greatest threat to managed honeybee colonies globally. Treatment options exist but resistance to chemical treatments is increasing.

Waggle Dance
Communication
A figure-eight movement performed by forager bees on the surface of the comb to communicate the direction and distance of a food source to other workers. The waggle run — the straight portion of the figure-eight — indicates direction by its angle relative to vertical, corresponding to the food source's direction relative to the sun. Duration of the waggle run encodes distance: approximately 75 milliseconds per 100 meters. Described by Karl von Frisch, Nobel Prize 1973.
Worker Bee
Colony Structure
A sterile female honeybee, comprising the vast majority of a colony's population. Workers perform all colony tasks except laying fertilized eggs: nursing larvae, producing wax and building comb, guarding the entrance, foraging for nectar and pollen, processing and storing honey, regulating hive temperature, and caring for the queen. Task assignment is loosely correlated with age — younger workers perform in-hive tasks; older workers forage. A summer worker's lifespan is approximately 6 weeks.
